A Hong Kong national visiting an exhibition in Goregaon is now left stranded in the city after four thieves decamped with her bag, which contained her passport and visa. The four thieves also stole jewellery and valuables worth Rs 90,000 from two other women during the exhibition.
On October 20, the foreigner along with two other women was among the thousands who had visited the Asian BusinessExhibitions and Conferences Ltd held at Bombay Exhibition Center, NESCO in Goregaon.
Ruchita Mittal, one of the other victims, said that at the exhibition while visiting the various stalls, she realised her bag and the bags of two other women had gone missing.
As soon as she came to know, she alerted the security present at the exhibition. The security started looking for the accused and nabbed three men within 20 minutes. However, they were unable to retrieve the valuables, as the fourth accused had disguised himself as a worker and fled from the area. The Hong Kong national was worried as her bag contained her passport and visa.
Following the theft, an FIR was lodged at Vanrai police station in Goregaon. Mittal said, “I was with my husband at the station along with the other two victims. We were made to sit for six hours and a single FIR was lodged.”
However, on-duty Inspector Ashok Phatak said, “People should be careful about their belongings when they go for exhibitions. We are checking the CCTV footage of that day. If we had any further information about the fourth accused, we would have caught him by now.”
When MiD DAY approached the in-charge of the security at the exhibition, Chetan Parmar of Royal Security said, “There were approximately 200 labourers who went inside the stall to dismantle it. We were asked to provide 40 security guards -- five were present in the hall and the rest were present at the gate. We are not responsible for any loss.”
