Pune: A notorious gangster, who was suspected to be involved in the murder of Right to Information activist Satish Shetty and in the murder of local BJP leader from Talegaon, was killed in an encounter on Tuesday morning. The deceased, identified as Shyam Dabhade (38), and his accomplice, Dhananjay Shinde (35), both residents of Koteshwar wadi in Talegaon, were shot in a police encounter.

Confirming the incident, Pune District Superintendent of Police Jay Jadhav said, “From late last night, our team was working on a lead which we had got about the two gangsters. Finally, inspector Ram Jadhav and his team zeroed in on him and around 8 am, the two were killed in police fire.”

Dhabhade hails from Maval and has more than 20 cases of murder and attempt to murder registered with various police stations in Pune city and Pune rural. According to the police, “Dhabhade was a notorious goon and, last month, he was involved in the killing of Sachin Shelke, president of BJP in Talegaon. He was on the run.”

The police had received information about his whereabouts, and that he was hiding with his accomplice at the Chakan mountain peaks near Varsai Pawanchakki. When they went to the spot, around 2 am, the police told the duo to surrender, but they retaliated with fire. The police responded by firing at them, during which the two were hit.

Dabhade sustained nine bullet injuries and was taken to hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The police recovered one country made pistol and 42 live bullets.
