Security was intensified in sensitive areas after news of bin Laden's death began trickling in; nakabandis will continue to be in place
A General alert was sounded in the city last morning after news started trickling in of al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden being killed in a US-led operation in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad. Security was intensified in places with large expatriate population, vital installations and public places, including the airport and railway stations.
Senior officials from the Mumbai Police said the force swung into action when they heard of the 9/11 mastermind's death through news channels last morning. Nakabandis were put in place across the city and police patrolling on the streets was intensified to avoid any untoward incident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police R Vhatkar said, "We found out about bin Laden's death through television news channels. A general alert was put in place throughout the city after the news. Security will remain intensified for a couple of days in the necessary locations."
"A travel advisory has been issued by the US consulate, but we are not issuing any advisories," he added. Officials said that nakabandis will continue to be in place in various parts of the city for a few more days as a security measure.
