The city has had a delayed monsoon, but according to the Met it can expect heavy showers over the next few days.
Low-pressure belt
Sudden changes in climatic conditions in the northeastern belt will lead to a revival of the monsoon, believe experts from the Indian Meteorological Department. The region began experiencing low pressure around 5.20 am yesterday, which is likely to lead to heavy rain over the next few days.
The Met says there will also be heavy rain in many other parts of the country.
Dr A B Mazumdar, deputy director general, Meteorological Weather Forecasting, said the city got minimal showers over the past week. "We were getting a few millimetres of rain daily. With the low pressure belt there will be a recovery in monsoon conditions and heavy showers are expected," he said. "But the forthcoming phase of the monsoon is not permanent and we have to wait and watch for how many days it rains."
Officials said such uncertain conditions were not unusual for the city. "It will never be a situation where the city does not get rain, but because of the Western Ghats there may be less rain than the coast," said Mazumdar.
