If you've travelled across Europe, one aspect of most of the architecture in its cities would have to be the sprawling circles and squares that dot its streetscapes. Mumbai might not measure up to London's Trafalgar Square or Venice's San Marco but it can boast of Horniman Circle. 
Beat the summer heat with a dekko of this architecturally diverse garden circle that boasts of quite a few gems. Kick start your mini trail at one of the city's oldest librariesu00a0-- the Asiatic Society Library, inside the Town Hall. Walk down the arches of the Renaissance-inspired buildings around Horniman Circle Gardens.
The circle was built on what was once a dumping ground for sub-standard cotton bales. Originally named Elphinstone, after one of Mumbai's Governors, this garden was later named after Benjamin Horniman, pro-India British businessman who incurred the wrath of the authorities. A few blocks ahead is the Gujarati-language Bombay Samachar office, home to Asia's oldest newspaper. St Thomas Cathedral, with its impressive spire and clock, is studded with real tales of brave Englishmen.
