On the pretext of trimming the trees, a few residents of Mayur Vihar Phase III have cut down 9-10 trees in a park.
The residents of Mayur Vihar Phase III, instead of doing something to preserve the green environment of the city, have decided to take steps in opposite direction. Recently, in the name of trimming the trees, the residents cut down 9-10 trees in a park of the area. The park belongs to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

Apparently, a few of the residents had, on the pretext of trimming the trees, taken the permission from the MCD. When MiD DAY approached them, they refused to admit it. "No trees were cut here. It was just a trimming process. The trees were bothering the people. There were mosquitoes all around the area, due to which children were falling ill. That's why we decided to trim them a little bit," said Renuka Kumari, one of the residents of Pocket A/1, Mayur Vihar Phase III.
H D Joshi, president of the Residents' Welfare Association (RWA), Mayur Vihar Phase III said, "There is nothing like that. People are unnecessarily creating a fuss about it. We have simply trimmed the trees down, and nothing else. We took the permission from MCD before taking any step. It's not at all illegal."
Interestingly, a few months ago, MLA Sandeep Dikshit planted more than 2,500 trees in the same area.
Sebastian K O, one of the residents, who initiated the tree-planting drive, said, "A few months ago, around 2,500 trees were planted by Dikshit. Now they are cutting down those trees in the name of trimming. Then what was the need of planting them earlier? It's really sad that instead of supporting the cause, they believe in harming and destroying the nature."
"Although, I tried my level best to stop it, at last, I was completely ignored by the authorities," added Sebastian. Meanwhile, Nakul Bhalla, founder president of the Green Team Welfare Society, said, "It's very disheartening to see how fully-grown trees were cut in a split of a second without considering the repercussions of such actions. People should think twice before doing any such thing. It's completely illegal."
Green team is a Delhi-based NGO that aims at spreading awareness about environmental issues. Ravi Aggarwal, founder director of NGO Toxic Links, said, "They need to have the permission from the Forest department for doing anything like this, whether it's trimming or cutting a tree. It's completely illegal and they will have to be fined for their action."
The other side
S S Khandpal, director, Horticulture, MCD said, "We have no idea about this. I have to check with my team regarding the matter. But if they have done any such thing, we will definitely take some action."
