A list of over 30 fine-dines across Mumbai enticed us when we signed into the Gourmet Passport mobile app, available on Android and iOS. Its proposition: buy one main course item and get one of the same or lesser value free using its coupons (three per restaurant). The brainchild of Rocky Mohan, one of the country's leading liquor barons, and cookbook author, the app debuts in Mumbai post a successful launch in Delhi last year.

How it works
After contemplating over an impressive list - including Le Cirque Signature at The Leela, Olive Bar & Kitchen and Salt Water Cafe - we headed to The Fatty Bao in Bandra. A quick read of the Rules Of Use section revealed that while you can redeem three coupons per restaurant, you can't do so at one time unless you order six or more dishes. It's also essential to inform the manager that you will be using them before placing the order. Plus, the coupons can't be used on delivery orders.

Bao wow
We decided to redeem a single coupon. The manager immediately fed the restaurant PIN into the app and we received an SMS confirmation. From the mains, we picked Malaysian Chicken Kapitan Curry (Rs 425) and Exotic Mushroom Ramen (Rs 385). The latter was complimentary. The bill felt lighter but we did have to pay taxes on all items since the coupon only covers dish price.

Then, we headed to The Beer Cafe for one-on-one offers on IMFL drinks and brewtails (beer cocktails). Sipping on an average brewtail, we wished the offer included other sections from the vast menu.

Priced at Rs 999 for an annual pack - where you can also redeem coupons at restaurants that will be added within the next six months - the app works best for foodies keen to try new places without burning a hole in their pocket. But to get more bang for your buck, we suggest you redeem your coupons at the fine-dines at five-stars.
