Breach of 'love contract' leads to filing of rape, cheating charges and arrest

A singeru00a0and guitarist, Himanshu Tiwari (32), who is a member of famous ghazal singer Anup Jalota's group, was arrested yesterday on charges of rape and cheating levelled by his girlfriend.

The 25-year-old complainant, also a singer in Jalota's group, accused Tiwari of violating a "love contract" signed between the two.

Himanshu Tiwari was accused of making false promises of marriage

According to the police, Tiwari and the woman were in a live-in relationship for three years and had mutually signed a legal contract that they would file a complaint against the one who betrays the other.

The woman filed the complaint at the Malwani police station yesterday, saying Tiwari had left her after making false promises of marriage.

Police officials said the couple had met during a stage show in 2009. "They had gone to Dubai for a show on an agreement with Jalota's group.

After returning to Mumbai they started living together in a rented flat in Goregaon.

Later they made a legal contract and agreed that if any one of them cheats the other or refuses marriage, the wronged person has the right to lodge a police complaint," said an officer attached to the Malwani police station.

In 2010, Tiwari left the woman without notice and bought a house in Malwani, Malad (West).

"The woman tried to contact Tiwari, but he avoided her. A few months ago, the couple patched up and started living together again after Tiwari apologised," said Senior Police Inspector A A Shaikh of the Malwani police station.

"But two months ago, Tiwari again left the woman and refused to marry her." After Tiwari had left her again, the woman approached the police.

The police investigated the case and scrutinised the "love contract" between the couple before arresting Tiwari on charges of rape and cheating.

The woman says she wants Tiwari to be taught a lesson. "I want the law to take strict action against him so that he does not spoil any other woman's life by making false promises to her," she said.
