Guwahati molestation prime accused held

Amarjyoti Kalita, prime accused in the Guwahati molestation case where a Std XI student was molested, reportedly surrendered in Varanasi yesterday.

According to police officials in Varanasi, a man who identified himself as Kalita surrendered to the police. However, police officials said they would await a team from the Guwahati police to verify his identity.


Earlier, police believed that Kalita may have gone to Kolkata. He was earlier suspected to have travelled to Mumbai. Kalita was spotted in CCTV footage recovered from the Howarh terminus in Kolkata and was believed to have escaped to thecity.


Kalita, who has played minor roles in a television serial on news channel NewsLive, was the prime accused in the molestation case that sparked national outrage.


There have also been allegations that the Guwahati resident was acting in connivance with the television reporter who filmed the incident, though the latter has denied the claims.u00a0Both the reporter and editor of NewsLive have since resigned from their posts.

The police have so far arrested 11 people in the case. The unedited footage of the incident was also sent for tests. The molestation incident took place on July 9. The teenager was molested and the incident was filmed by the NewsLive journalist, Neog.

While the video of the incident went viral on the Internet, 12 accused were identified and their pictures were out not just in Guwahati, but throughout the Internet, asking people to inform the police wherever any of them was seen.u00a0
