Had Your Fala-Fill?

When we ploughed our way through the maddening traffic, caused by Ganpati celebrations, to a tiny food kiosk opposite Ruia College, the mind instantly connected Falafil Sandwichu00a0 to the larger chain -- Falafel's Veg Hummus House.

Falafil Sandwich. PICS/BIPIN KOKATE

Why? Simply, because the former uses the same green-and-white colour combination on its hoarding and logo as the latter, which has been marred by rude service. Turns out there is no connection between the two eateries. Thankfully.

In a suburb where you are bound to find Rasam Vada and Mysore Masala Dosa around every corner, Falafil Sandwich brings a refreshing choice for the residents and the many college students who perpetually hang around the area. Bad news for those who like to have their food comfortably seated though -- this one has no seating space, and you will be forced to take shelter on the benches around the surrounding trees.

The friendly staff at Falafil Sandwich patiently answered our questions and was generous in their recommendations depending on our food-mood and palate (no salads, please). We skipped the salads (Fattoush and Tabouleh for those who care about their health more than we do) and decided to go in for one of the paisa vasool combo meals that included a Falafil Sandwich, Zattar Pizza and a 500 ml-Ice Tea for a cool price of Rs 135.

We would have liked the sandwich to be fuller and the veggies fresher but the hummus and the falafel balls were superbly delicious. The thin-crust pizza had a nice sprinkling of the Middle Eastern spice
mixture -- Za'atar -- and was layered with cheese, which we are sure took away the Lebanese element. But we love, love, love cheese and aren't complaining. The winner though, was clearly the refreshing Ice Tea, served in a plastic bottle but perfectly cool.

We hate to admit, but further sinning came in the form of munchies. The Cheese Shots (Rs 75 for five pieces) were fried wheat dumplings stuffed with oozing cheese and bits of capsicum, served with the finger-licking 'chef's special sauce', which we suspect is a variation of the Thousand Island dressing. But the Curly Fries (Rs 55), a masala version of the regular French Fries, were oily and quite disappointing. We expected the Bell Shots (Rs 55) to have colourful bell peppers but turned out that the fried and oily (but tasty nonetheless) nuggets only had disappointing capsicum bits.

You can expect to see more Falafil outlets across the city soon (Mulund, Ghatkopar and Lower Parel outlets are in the pipeline). We suggest you pick up their sandwich on the go, and attempt to indulge guiltlessly with Cheese Shots. That is, if you manage to not confuse Falafil's outlet with its competitor's.
