Happy Men's Day!

Men are happy this month. November 19 will be celebrated as International Men's Day all across the country.

Though women are allowed in the celebrations, the focus will be on men and their sufferings at home, workplace and society at large. When asked why should there be a day dedicated to men, the reply is, "If you can have a Women's Day, why can't we have one?" Women on the other hand say, "Why do men need a day? Without any woman behind them will there ever be a successful man?"

As the battle of the sexes continues over who deserves a date on the calendar, the basic question goes unanswered. Why do we even need a specific day for men or women? If it is the question of celebrating humanity, then should we not have an International Human's day?

Funnily however, what goes unnoticed is that the kinds of suffering both genders undergo are fundamentally similar be it psychologically, emotionally and socially. How does it matter if your spouse or boss is giving you trouble? Both men and women would be affected mentally and emotionally.

Men have been talking about emotional castration since childhood and claiming that whenever they have cried, they have been told, "Don't cry like a girl". They claim that these words have stayed with them through their growing years ultimately leading to an emotional suppression. But doesn't a young girl child in India often hear, "Learn to control your emotions. What will you do when you go to your husband's home?"

Therefore castration of emotions seems to be the way Indian society braces its future adults to face the world. Hence if the pain and suffering is the point, then why not celebrate it together? However, the super Indian male ego is unique as one of my friends after hearing that there is something like International Men's Day said, "Everyday is a man's day. We don't need a single day to show who we are?"

Well, I guess many men out there will agree with him while women will call names. But what struck me about his comment was how we categorise ourselves in the roles of sufferer and the victim.

While men are always thought to be the cause of disasters, women are the ones who seem to bear its effect.

It might have been true at one point but tables seem to have turned. There have been recent instances where innocent men and their families have been harassed falsely for demanding dowry. It shows that they can suffer too. Thus celebrating one day for menfolk hardly makes sense. Instead a little understanding and compassion may give us more reasons to celebrate each other every day.
