'Harassed' PMPML bus driver attempts suicide
A Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) bus driver on Saturday tried to commit suicide at the Hadapsar bus depot, it was learnt yesterday.
The driver told the police he was fed up with the harassment he faced from his colleagues. Identified as Rajendra Baburao Panhale (32), the injured driver, a resident of Hadapsar, was allowed to go after counselling by the police.
The PMPML administration ordered an inquiry into the incident. The manager of the Hadapsar bus depot was asked to submit a report after investigating the case.
Senior Police Inspector Pandharinath Mandhare from the Hadapsar police station said: "The driver has been working in the PMPML for seven years and on Saturday afternoon he came to the depot keeper's office to lodge a complaint against some of his colleagues, but he could not meet the manager. He then allegedly poured kerosene on himself and tried to set himself on fire. However, some office-bearers, drivers and conductors intercepted him and he was arrested for attempting suicide.
"During the primary interrogation, the driver told us that he was fed up with his colleagues' constant taunts. He told us that his colleagues used to make fun of him and sometimes used to puncture his bus tyres just to harass him and all these things prompted him to take the extreme step. "We arrested him for attempting suicide, but on Saturday night he was released after a counselling session."
