The officials of the police department yesterday informed the Bombay High Court that applications related to regularising about 125 illegal police chowkies were still pending with the civic body
The division bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and K K Tated then ordered the BMC to take a call on regularisation of the chowkies within six weeks. The decision is pending, even though some of the applications were filed way back in 2005. The civic body will now have to file a compliance report by March 7.
Additional Public Prosecutor Aruna Pai told the court that out of 391 police chowkies, 252 were illegal and the BMC had demolished 61 of these till date. The court was hearing a public interest litigation by activist IK Chhugani that about 300 police chowkies in the city were constructed without requisite permissions. Only two have been regularised so far.

Chhugani had filed a PIL in 2007 demanding demolition of illegal police chowkies in the city. An affidavit filed in 2008 by then Joint Commissioner of Police (Administration) late Hemant Karkare had stated that out of 388 chowkies, 269 lacked requisite permissions from the BMC. The affidavit had assured that the illegality would be rectified in a phased manner and thanked Chhugani for bringing the illegalities to the fore.u00a0
