HC to Maharashtra: Pay teachers from Union Bank a/cs

The government teachers complaining of having received no salary since July can heave a sigh of relief. The Bombay High Court, in an interim order on Friday, directed the state to issue their salaries through their Union Bank accounts, until the conclusion of the case against the state's decision to issue the salaries through the Mumbai District Central Co-operative Bank (MDCC).

Teachers will know on Monday about when their salaries will be deposited, as state has demanded time from HC to devise a plan of action to reuse Union Bank accounts after consulting experts.

The case began after a Government Resolution (GR) on issuing the salaries through MDCC instead of Union Bank was met with tremendous criticism from the teachers' community. They opposed the state's decision of changing the salary account to a bank that has been caught up in a financial scam.

The Teachers Democratic Fund (TDF), which had moved HC against the state's diktat, was rejoiced after hearing HC's directive. Janardan Jangle from TDF said, 'While the broader case on opposing the government's decision of opening accounts in MDCC continues, this interim order comes as a relief. This salary deposit will continue till August as HC would be hearing the case in September.' He added, 'However, since the government has already closed accounts in Union Bank, they have to decide how they can be reused for issuing salary of two months. We are hopeful about Monday now.'
