Minor accused of slaying Borivli senior citizen alleges the old man had been molesting him; cops dismiss allegation, call it a ploy to gain sympathy

After allegedly slitting the throat of a 71-year-old Borivli resident and banging his head against the wall until he died, the two minors charged with the brutal murder say they had a good reason to do it: they were being forced to have oral sex.

Charged with brutal murder, the two arrested minors have been sent to Dongri Remand Home

On February 23, the Borivli police arrested Ramesh Gaikwad (17), his accomplice Nishant Dave (17), and their friend Sanjay Ranpise (21), all Borivli residents, for slaughtering senior citizen Subhash Desai.

(The names of the two minors have been changed).

While Sanjay was sent to police custody by a local court, Ramesh and Nishant were sent to the children's remand home in Dongri.

"He (Desai) had been forcing me to have oral sex with him for the last four years. When I refused, he threatened me," said Ramesh to the counsellors at the remand home yesterday.

According to officials at the remand home, when the duo arrived late Wednesday night, they showed no remorse for their action.

As a practice, they were made to speak to the counsellor on Thursday morning.

The conversation revealed that Ramesh, a school dropout after Std IX, had a job as a liftman in Dadar. He earned a monthly salary of Rs 3,500, and lived with his parents. Nishant, also a school dropout, was jobless.

Minor's version

Ramesh told the cousellors that Desai's adopted son, Satya (22), introduced him to the old man a few years ago. Desai, who lived by himself in his apartment, would call him, ostensibly to help out with chores.

He would offer him snacks and tea, and then initiate foreplay, which would end with oral sex, Ramesh alleged.

This continued for a few months until he learnt that the old man did the same with 10 other young boys from the locality he kept changing his partners.

Ramesh said that he wanted to stop visiting Desai and made this clear to him, but Desai threatened to disclose the sexual nature of their relationship to his parents. On days, when he refused to go to his place, Desai would come to get him on some pretext or another.

After Ramesh learnt that his friends Nishant and Sanjay had been through a similar experience, the trio decided to settle his act.

On February 19, they killed him. After the murder, they ransacked the house and escaped with Rs 1,900 of cash from the flat, which they later used to eat in hotels.

Decaying corpse

Reportedly, after the boys fled the spot, the carcass of Desai's mangled body lay decomposing for days until the neighbours recognised the stench of death. They called the police.

After enquiring, cops gathered that residents of Desai's building had seen Ramesh visiting his apartment regularly.

They nabbed him first. During the course of questioning, he let out about his accomplices and they were arrested.

Venereal disease?

After listening to the minors' tale, senior officials at the remand home fear that both Ramesh and Nishant may be suffering from a sexually-transmitted disease.

They will be sent to JJ hospital today for medical tests, cops said.

Incidentally, Nishant told the counsellors that he has multiple sclerosis, a life threatening disease, a fact which his father confirmed before hanging up on the counsellors who had called him to break the news of the arrest.

But when the counsellors examined him, they couldn't find any symptoms.

Officials said that though the parents of both the accused were informed about the arrest, none of them turned up to meet the boys.

Spinning yarn?

The police doubt if there is any grain of truth in what Ramesh has recounted to the counsellors. They believe the sodomy tale is his ruse to save his hide.

Additional Police Commissioner (North Region) Ramrao Pawar rubbished Ramesh's statement, saying, "The boys are making an attempt to gain sympathy now by making such statements.

They committed an offence intentionally. They hacked the old man to death. This fact cannot be ruled out. We have gathered sufficient evidence to nail them. And our probe is still on."

At present, the children's remand home in Dongri has 48 boys under trial, including six who are being tried for murder cases
