Minta and his gang of seven (five of whom were Bangladeshis) have committed more than 200 robberies in north India. Acting on a tip-off the police arrested Minta and his aides after laying a trap on April 30 at the DDA Jungle in Vasant Kunj.

"At around 5.10 pm, six persons came in a car and a motorcycle and one of the persons whom our informer identified as Minta started briefing all the members about the robbery they were to commit. They sensed our presence and tried to run away but our men nabbed them," said HGS Dhaliwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South).u00a0

Minta, the gang's leader, had been on the run for several years. He would escape to Bangladesh after a spate of crimes.

Sources said that Minta visited the Ajmer Sharif Dargah every 2-3 months and stole a new car each time on his return. "Minta was smart and never used the same car twice. He would steal vehicles from the highway. In the past few months, Minta and his gang members had also stolen vehicles from Chandigarh," said a police official.

In several robbery cases, the victims, mostly from business families had complained that the gang would break into their houses and tied them up at gunpoint before drinking the liquor they had in their house.

"Minta had started to believe that if he and his gang members drank liquor, which was available in the house, that would bring them good luck and they would never get caught," a source said.

During the interrogation, the robbers revealed that they would send money to their families in Bangladesh through Hawala.

"This was done with the help of certain people in old Delhi who were close to Minta," said HGS Dhaliwal.
Minta, who was residing in Mohan Nagar area of Ghaziabad, was living in the garb of a scrap dealer.
