The decadence of Diwali out of the way, now is a good time for a complete detox to get your body and mind back on track

Cleanse from within

Sign up for a detox session, called Shuddhikaran that takes you through five intensive exercises. You start with drinking four glasses of water, followed by retching it out. Post this, a thin rubber pipe is inserted into the nose and the other end is pulled out of the mouth. Yoga instructor and owner of Yoga Topics, Sneh Ganotra, says, “This sounds painful, but I can guarantee that it's not. People fear the description, but once they attend a class, it's a breeze. It's essentially a breathing exercise, to clean your respiratory system.” This is followed by potneti, the ancient art of nasal wash. “In this, water is poured into one nostril and poured out of the other,” she explains. These three exercises are followed by five minutes of pranayam. Another routine called the shank prakashan is also ideal for detox. “You drink six-seven glasses of water and an asana is performed after every two glasses. All the asanas are different. This is a 1.5-hour long routine and it cleanses the digestive system,” she adds.

Want to eat out? Opt for these detox drinks

Go for a cold pressed juice called the Green Booster that comprises kale, lime and spirulina. There is also the Green Smoothie where you can choose between avocado, lime or a kale base. There's also a mix of turmeric, almond milk and gluten-free oats, served with fresh pomegranates. All the recipes have been developed in consultation with nutritionists, and, therefore, are ideal for the post-indulgence clean up you are looking for.

Follow the seasonal path

Don't feel like eating out? Nutritionist Smitha Shetty suggests a simple home diet. Start your day with any seasonal fruit — chiku, sitaphal or a banana — as they help detox and can prepare the body for the impending season change. Meals should be kept rice based, as that's easy to digest. She recommends khichdi and seasonal leafy vegetables like palak and banana flower. Also, ensure you have dinner before 7.30 pm for a week. “There's a concoction you can try. It's made of dry roasted coriander, jeera, methi, boiled in water. Add a bit of jaggery, strain it and drink it before going to bed,” she says.

Attend a spa session

Immerse yourself in a blend of healing aromatic oils, relaxing agents and fragrant incenses to unwind after a festive weekend. Sink into a deep sense of relaxation as the gentle strokes of therapists, steaming poultice and a mixture of Indian herbs and oil revitalise your body in a two-hour session. You can also opt for a session on exfoliation that rinses away stress and fatigue. Prior appointment is required for a personalised session. Some sessions like the Samattva also provides a yoga expert on request.
