Hope floats for the family of an eight-year-old girl whose father sold their passports to a tout for funding her treatment.

After MiD DAY reported about the incident, several people have come forward with monetary help and most of them do not even want their gestures recognised.

A group of three friends based in Mumbai has offered to pay for the treatment of the child. Another MiD DAY reader, Sanjeev Goswami from Mumbai, wanted to know the family's address to send help.

Apart from good Samaritans coming forward to help the family, various netizens have reacted sharply to the story on MiD DAY's website (www.mid-day/delhi.com).

A reader says that NGOs would never come to the rescue of such families as it does not get them publicity. "A whole contingent of NGOs rushed to help the victims of Mumbai attacks because it got them cheap publicity. But when it comes to such needy people, no NGO or celebrity comes forward," he wrote.

Another Australia-based reader blamed the medical facilities in our country that holds nothing for the poor.
"What a sad story! Had India had good public hospitals this little girl could have been treated free of charge. Otherwise there is no way a patient like this will have to pay out of pocket for treatment in countries like Australia where I live, one can rely on public hospitals here. Basic infrastructure like hospitals, food, housing is a big problem in India, only rich can survive in Indiau2026No one cares about the pooru2026That's terrible," he said.

MiD DAY had reported on March 5 that a family from Thane had sold off its passports and Canadian travel documents to treat the child who is suffering from a chronic brain ailment.

Earlier, her father had sold off their house and rented out his shop to treat her. And when he ran out of money he sold off the family's passports and visa documents to an agent. The incident came to light when those traveling on their documents under fake names were arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
The girl's father is still lodged in Tihar Jail as the family does not even have money to bail him out.
The family also confirmed getting calls to help them.

The mother of the child said getting her husband released was her priority.
