Hema Malini skips visit to Gandhi's birthplace, winning her a dig from Zeenat Aman

Hema Malini skips visit to Gandhi's birthplace

Hema Malini skipped visiting Kirti Mandir Mahatma Gandhi's birthplace while canvassing support for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Porbander last week. Enough reason for the Congress to seek political mileage from the actress MP's no-show at the national monument.

On Sunday, Zeenat Aman flew into Porbandar to canvas support for the Congress. The yesteryear actress, who was present for 40 minutes at an election rally, took a jibe at Hema not visiting the historical site. "You visit Porbander and not visit Kirti Mandir, yeh koi baat hui?" asked Zeenat.

On opposite sides

Hema's no-show and Zeenat's remark has opened a Pandora's box. Rival parties have quickly acted on Basanti's gesture labelling it not merely a faux pas but an insult!

Both the stars were contemporaries as well as rivals and at one time both vied to be Dev Anand's screen girls. They also appeared together on the chat show Koffee With Karan (2007) but owing to their different political allegiances now find themselves on opposite sides of the fence.

Not without Esha

Says a source, "Hema had sensed that her not visiting Kirti Mandir would spell trouble for her. On second thoughts, she stated that she did not visit Bapuji's birthplace as she had promised her daughter Esha Deol that they would both visit it together.

And as Esha was not accompanying her, she had to give it a miss."

Adds the source, "But this is something the opponents could not fathom and as soon as Zeenat landed, she was sounded off on what to say at the rally."

B-Town flavour

Apart from their political speeches, both the actresses also had to impart B-Town flavour to their meetings. Their Basanti and Laila personas of the screen too were in the forefront as the public mouthed their dialogues from the films they are best remembered for.
