Here, you can judge a book by its cover

If you are the type who judges a book by its cover, and how the text and pictures are played inside, the Best of Dutch Book Design is a must-visit. Be forewarned, for you’ve got just one day to catch a glimpse of the 30 Dutch books on display at the Dutch Design Workspace India in Parel.

Selected by a jury from all the books published last year, the show celebrates the rich graphic design culture of the Netherlands, and at the same time attempts to understand the direction where graphic designing is headed to. The 86-year-old design competition considers materials and printing quality as well as graphic design and typography while selecting titles.

Some of the books that caught our eye, immediately, included adaptations of old Dutch books auch as Exotic Love, a love story originally published in 1808.
The book, designed by Studio Virjok, combines classic Dutch book designing with modern design elements.

The Dutch adaptations of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment and Greek poet Homer’s Iliad are also some books worth browsing through, especially for its typography.

Then there is The Bible For Girls, a 1,600-page complete Bible that comes with a blue, pink and red patchwork of imitation leather with cotton and lace, to attract girls and young women. This book comes as a big surprise from the secular Dutch.

The design show also has a selection of photo books such as one by Dutch political photographer Vincent Mentzel, who was known for his portraits of Dutch politicians and statesmen. They also have a collection of musical CD books — The Carnival of the Animals, Cinderella, Firebird and Swan Lake — that portarys fairy tales stories in the form of illustrated books along with music CDs, combining pictures, music and text all in one book.
