High voltage political drama

The Karnataka Governor received a letter on Wednesday saying 19 BJP MLAs were withdrawing their support to the government, followed by Yeddyurappa dismissing four independents from the cabinet. The governor HR Bharadwaj fixed October 12 for the vote of confidence on the floor of the house.

The political drama continued yesterday as well when two of the BJP rebels returned to Yeddyurappa camp in the afternoon. Speculations were rife that BJP was poaching legislators from Congress and JD(S), that pushed the respective parties to take them to hideouts.

Rebels led by excise minister Renukacharya arrived at a hotel in Goa, with Tourism Minister G Janardana Reddy paying a visit. Reddy managed to clinch the deal with the rebels and Renukacharya expressed solidarity to the government. JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy also arrived to meet the dissidents, but left after heated arguments, without any result.

Then came the Speaker's order, suspending three MLAs from the Opposition late night, for their misbehaviour in the house last year. The speculation was that it was in a bid to reduce the Opposition's strength for the vote of confidence, that CM is expected to seek on Monday.

Meanwhile, scared of the ill-effects of Mahalaya amavasya, Yeddyurappa ordered that the doors of Vidhan Soudha remain closed even on Wednesday, even though it was a working day.
