It was the second time that Vijay Diwas was celebrated on a large scale. About 150 students, NCC cadets and serving as well as retired high-ranking officers from the Southern Command were present for the programme.
A soulful rendition of patriotic songs by around 150 students of Army Public School and Kendriya Vidyalaya (Southern Command and Army Area) was the curtain raiser at the event. It was followed by the wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial involving serving officers and civilian dignitaries like Divisional Commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh and Mayor Vaishali Bankar. The final wreath was laid by Lt Gen A K Singh, Southern Army Commander.
The National War Memorial was built in memory of martyrs of the 1971 war, which saw the creation of the new nation of Bangladesh. Handed over to the nation in 1998, the memorial had undergone major renovation in 2008.
