Dakota Johnson, star of the controversial (in India) 'Fifty Shades of Grey' plays a young woman, Alice, searching for love in New York city, in this sex obsessed comedy based on the novel by Liz Tuccillo (writer of 'Sex and the city') and produced by another popular star of romantic comedies, Drew Barrymore.
It's a kind of 'Sex and the City' re-run with a younger demographic in mind. The amorous misadventures of young New Yorkers looking for love in all the wrong places, is a little hard to stomach, especially since it comes after so many generic staples that have obsessively stomped over the same boring route. The humor here though is a little more spicier and entertaining that what you would find in the generic regulars. and that's mainly because Robin (Rebel Wilson as the no-holds-barred, friend -cum-advisor of Alice), gives mouthing profanities, sexual innuendos and inanities a whole new meaning. She is both irreverent and unrestrained in her advice to her friend- which makes for some entertaining moments at least.
Robin is supposedly her co-worker (you don't see any work being done in the movie) and Alice while initially awkward in the ways of being single in the city, suddenly begins to live it up a notch. She jumps into bed with a bartender Tom (Anders Holm) and also gets involved with David (Damon Wayans Jr.) while having second-thoughts and numerous bump-ins with a former boyfriend. Alice's single, older sister, Meg (Leslie Mann), an obstetrician manages to get pregnant through a sperm donor and then ends up meeting a nice guy-on-the-prowl, younger than her, Ken (Jake Lacy) who might just be the right guy for her after all. And Lucy( Alison Brie) signs up on 10 different dating sites to get to her ideal.
Yeah those typical Americanized dysfunctions, warts and all, are exposed quite liberally here and while it’s not entirely boring it’s not all that funny either. As Valentines Day bait though, this might just about manage to get a foot in.
