No Remrse: Constable Shatrughan Meshram allegedly murdered his
wife Kavita at his quarters (below) in Andheri (East) on Thursday night

In his confessional statement, Meshram, attached to Local Arms Unit II at Tardeo, said, "She has been having an affair with someone for two years now. She would say that she was going to meet her parents, but would go meet her boyfriend. I warned her many times, but she kept betraying me. I had been keeping a watch on her, and at last, I killed her. I have no regrets."

"Meshram suspected that his wife, Kavita, made excuses to go to her parents' house in Latur because she was having an affair. To verify his doubts, the constable took a month's leave to keep a watch on her," said an officer from MIDC police station. On Thursday night, Meshram had a fight with Kavita in front of their kids, Vishaka and Sonali. The fight turned violent and Meshram began assaulting Kavita, accusing her of having an affair. When Kavita revolted, denying the accusations, he went to the kitchen and returned with a knife. In a fit of rage, he stabbed her eight times in her abdomen, chest and back, cops said.

Screams drowned
According to neighbours, since it was the night after Diwali, firecrackers kept going off in the area, drowning out Kavita's screams.u00a0However, a next-door neighbour said, "I heard Kavita scream once. We knew they were fighting, and sensing that something could go wrong, I immediately called the police control room. Soon, the MIDC police arrived. When they opened the door, we found Kavita lying on the floor in a pool of blood, while her husband and two children were sitting nearby."

Kavita was rushed to Cooper hospital, where she was declared dead on admission and Meshram was arrested.
Police sources said that Kavita was aware of her husband's suspecting nature and she had even discussed the same with her close friends. Also, Meshram had told her numerous times not to go to her native place or step out of the residence.

Deepak Bagwe, police inspector, MIDC police station, said, "When we reached his place, Meshram was found with the weapon. He immediately confessed to the crime and surrendered. Since we arrested him, he has shown no remorse." He added, "We found that the family had celebrated the festival with a feast. But they had a fight and he stabbed his wife to death. Both the children are witnesses in the case," he added.
