For the last two days, the traffic police have clamped down heavily on all government officers and others who use the official red or yellow beacon on private vehicles. On Tuesday night, the traffic police penalised an additional commissioner of Income Tax for fixing a yellow beacon on a private taxi.

The incident occurred at 8 pm near Godrej Building in Worli, when traffic constable Amol Palve from the Worli traffic police noticed a private cab having a yellow beacon. Following instructions, he stopped the cab immediately, only to find the Income Tax official sitting in the car.

Cracking the whip: Following the diktat by police commissioner Arup
Patnaik, officials have been carrying out a drive to ensure that all bikers
wear certified ISI helmets, and the misuse of beacon lights on vehicles
is under check

"Kumar, the additional commissioner of Income Tax was sitting in the cab. He immediately intervened and told Palve of his post. But Palve was in no mood to listen and asked Kumar to remove the beacon and also seized the driver's licence," said an officer from the Worli division.

Confirming the incident, Brijesh Singh, additional commissioner of police, traffic division, said, "The driver of the taxi will be fined and only after that his licence will be given to him. We are carrying this drive in full earnestness as per instructions given to us."

Helmet watch
Officials have also been asked to come down heavily on bikers who use helmets without the ISI certification. The traffic division has already fined 1,247 people for not wearing helmets, 643 for not wearing the correct headgear. "Bikers have been found using head gears of inferior quality just to protect them from police action,"said a police officer.
