I'd love to go back to theatre: Boman Irani

Known for his comic capers, Boman Irani essays a serious lawyer in his next. And once again he shares screen space with his former co-star Arshad Warsi. Keeping a straight face, Boman says why there were no pranks on the sets, advising son Kayoze on his Bollywood career and returning to theatre one day...

Boman Irani

You started your acting career on the stage. Any plans to go back to theatre?
Yes, of course. I did theatre for 12 years and I have not even completed 10 years in cinema. I hope you don’t throw me out of cinema so early. At least, let me complete my 12 years in cinema as well! Though I hope I am not getting on anyone’s nerves. But on a serious note, yes, I would love to get back to theatre.

Did your son Kayoze get any film offers post Student of the Year?
Kayoze has been receiving some good offers but he is taking it easy. Right now he is assisting Karan Johar and is learning and understanding the working of cinema. He has three to four film offers but he wants to be a director, so let’s see. My other son was in Dubai and had an event management company. He is back in Mumbai and will be joining a production company soon.

Do you advise Kayoze on his career?
Yes, as a father I do. I think I do have the right to take him to a corner at times and tell him what to do and what not to do, especially when I am part of the same industry. It’s not a bad idea to give him advice considering the experience I have.

From comic roles, you play a serious lawyer in your next.
Yes, for a change I am playing a serious role. The film is a satire of sorts and is based on real-life happenings. People who don’t know how to even write have become lawyers. All these things happen all over the courts in our country. I play a top lawyer in the film.

How was it working with Arshad Warsi again?
Well, a lot of people think that when Arshad and I work together we keep on playing pranks, but no, it is nothing like that. We are more of one-liner people and have fun on the sets by enjoying our work and having food and drinks.

How’s your photography hobby going?
I do pick up the camera at times, but as an actor now I only treat it as a way to pass time. I only do observational work and portraits whenever time allows me to. During the shoot of Student of the Year in Bangkok, I used my new camera gifted by Karan Johar to click pictures on the sets.u00a0
