Thanks to Vighnesh and Abhishek, Bandra school secures promotion to Elite Division of the Giles Shield Âu00c2u0094 13 years after winning the tournament
IES New English School (Bandra) earned promotion to the Elite Division of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association Giles Shield after three years by trouncing Balmohan Vidyamandir (Dadar) by an innings and 83 runs in the Plate Division final at Azad Maidan yesterday.
The Bandra school’s bowlers — left-arm-spinner Vighnesh Solanki and left-arm chinaman Abhishek Dayalkar — stole the show by taking nine (3-35 and 6-26) and eight wickets (6-36 and 2-38) respectively in the final.

Earlier, Balmohan were dismissed for 125 in their first essay after electing to bat. In reply, IES New English posted 310 on the board thanks to Darshan Bhanage knock of 105.
The pick of bowlers for Balmohan was left-arm-spinner Bhooshan Kastur who scalped seven wickets giving away 127 runs. In the second essay, the Dadar School was bundled out for 102.
After winning the Giles Shield Elite Division in 2000, IES New English’s performances in the inter-school U-14 tournament have been on the decline.
Talking about the school’s lacklustre performances in the inter-school tournament over the past few years, the Bandra school’s principal Bharati Hajari said, “It was due to our (school management) negligence that the team’s performance went from bad to worse.
The school won the Giles Shield Elite title way back in 2000. Later, we stopped giving preference to sports. Our coaches, Satish (Samant) sir and Sandesh (Walawalkar) sir, have worked hard with the boys and their efforts seemed to have paid off. Now I want them to win the Giles Shield Elite title next year.”
“Once we had a good lead (185 runs in the first innings), we knew we would win. This is my last year in the Giles Shield and what a way to end it,” said Vighnesh, who has taken 15 wickets in the tournament.
