Vimanika's exhibition of comic book covers is likely to appeal to a wide audience ranging from the graphic novel enthusiast to more devout followers of Hinduism

Rippling muscles, billowing hair, trident firmly clasped in hand, and striking a defiant pose: the Shiva in Vimanika's graphic art exhibition is different from traditional depictions of the Hindu god of destruction that show him in a meditative state.

Dashaavatar

"We wanted to showcase the personality of the gods; and not what they have traditionally been imagined as.

Though a god, Vishnu is a man, and we depict him as one," explains Karan Vir Arora, CEO, Vimanika Comics.

The Indian comics company is showcasing digital prints of its book covers on canvas. Just as the comics narrate stories of Indian mythology with a modern twist, these canvasses too carry contemporary influences, in terms of their graphic-art appeal.

"Through this exhibition we are exploring the other side of art: comic art. We aim to bring graphic art into the mainstream art industry. It is also a platform for people who are involved in the business to highlight the effort that goes into creating each piece," says Arora.

The prints include the cover of their forthcoming comic, Shiva, as well as past issues that include Bhoomi, Vayu and Agni, which are part of the Kalki series. Other titles include Dashaavatar, Rishi Bhrigu, and a specially created piece of Karna to name a few. Given that the choice of subjects all hail from the Indian mythological universe, the canvasses are likely to interest and appeal to a wide audience that includes the graphic novel enthusiast. The exhibition is a cinematic representation of Hindu mythology, depicting gods as humans.
