The Rajiv Gandhi E-learning School, an ambitious project of the Pune Municipal Corporation that aims to provide free school education to poor students through e-learning, has failed to fulfil the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) norms for affiliation to the board.
A letter sent by CBSE states that if the school fails to implement the norms, the application sent by the school is liable to be rejected and the approval sought for middle school syllabus for the academic session 2012-13 will not be processed further.u00a0A few months ago, the school requested the CBSE for affiliation, following which the school was given time till June 20 to fulfil the norms.
In its letter sent to the school authorities, the CBSE pointed out that the school did not have a playground within its premises. The board also raised the issue of appointment of teachers in the school and mentioned that the school had not designated its teachers properly. It also instructed the school that it should purchase more books and CDs in its library and also appoint a trained librarian.

Congress corporator Aba Bagul, who initiated the school project, said there must have been some misunderstanding on the part of the CBSE while inspecting the school. “As the school is located at the centre of the city, it would not be possible to have a playground on its premises,” Bagul said.
He said the school possessed its own spacious playground with all facilities just 200 metres from it. “It’s better than many private schools, which don’t have playgrounds at all,” Bagul said. He said he was confident the school would overcome the other shortcomings and soon get approval from CBSE.
Bagul also held the civic administration responsible for the development, saying civic officials and even the Mayor should visit the board office in Delhi and clear the misunderstandings.
Mayor Vaishali Bankar said she would personally look into the matter and take necessary steps. “The issue of the school is already before us and I am working on it,” Bankar said. u00a0Civic activist Vijay Kumbhar, who raised several issues about the school over the past few months, said the school should at least now stop playing with the future of students. u00a0
CBSE curriculum despite objection
Congress corporator Aba Bagul said students of Std VIII in the school were currently being taught according to the CBSE curriculum as approval from the board would be obtained in future. In its letter, CBSE has asked the school to submit a compliance report on the deficiencies pointed out by it and not run classes under the CBSE pattern.
