In mango heaven

It is always good to get some dope on the scientific aspects, and Wikipedia says that mangoes belong to the genus Mangifera, consisting of numerous species of tropical fruiting trees in the flowering plant family Anacardiaceae.

Of course, since one of the most interesting varieties is the Alphonso, you should check out this entry, which gives the history and says that this is named after a Portuguese nobleman called Afonso de Albuquerque.

If you think that only Indians are infatuated with this king of fruits, you should read this article, which says that Tainan-grown Irwin mangoes should be a big hit in the Japanese market this summer.

Mangoes, they say, are like scotch--they should be consumed alone, without any anaemic assistance from any other entity. But some will disagree, and well, to each his own, so you can check out some recipes like mango pie, mango and dried tomato chutney, mango ice cream, and more.

Of course, to get the foreign perception of India's mango mania, visit this page. Though it was written in 2006, it is worth reading.
