Increasing numbers of women are popping the question

A new survey has revealed that an increasing number of women are proposing their loved ones to marry them.

However, three-quarters of women who've done so wish that their partner had beaten them to it, the Daily Mail reported.

The survey also showed Britons are losing their romantic spark when it comes to marriage proposals, as only one in five men continue the traditional romantic gesture of going down on one knee and nearly half spend less than a few days planning their proposal.

It further says Hollywood-inspired romantic proposals in sunny climes are no longer in use, as seven in ten men proposed in their home instead of whisking their partner abroad for a romantic getaway.

The poll of 1,500 adults shows that when British women propose it is impulsive with four out of five women proposing with less than a month's planning and over half of those proposing spontaneously.

Commentating on the results, Trevor Silvester, a Harley Street relationship therapist, said: "There are several reasons why romance is disappearing from marriage proposals.

"The recession is probably having an effect on people's aspirations. In times where money is tight people tend to lower their dreams a little and look to find the romance through some other, cheaper, means," he added.
