India can flourish with pace of Ishant & Umesh: Brett Lee

Former Australian pacer Brett Lee felt that India need to get their combination right especially in the bowling department if they want to defend their title in the ICC Cricket World Cup starting February 14.

Depth of the matter
“The Indian side has got depth. They have a truckload of cricketers, but it is necessary to have the right combination at the right time. I think what India needs to do is ensure that the fast bowlers are completely fit for the tournament. I think Ishant Sharma could be a bowler that could play a huge role along with someone like Yadav (Umesh). The need of the hour for India is pace,” said Lee, who spoke via teleconference from Sydney after the launch of Disney India’s official digital game for the Cup — ICC Pro Cricket 2015.

Talking about the bouncy Australian pitches he said, “Out here, they need quick bowlers to bowl good bouncers and have a good slower delivery in their armoury along with the skills to bowl during the death overs. What I mean by bowl at the death is to be able to deliver fast, 145 km yorkers that can knock a team at the death.” Though he did not want to predict a winner for this edition of the World Cup Lee talked up Australia’s chances. “I think Australia has a great chance of winning the World Cup just like India, South Africa and New Zealand,” said the 38-year-old who has 380 ODI wickets to his name.

Pitch perfect
Lee also said that he would prefer traditional Australian wickets for the tournament and fast pitches everywhere. “I want the Perth to be little bouncy while I want Sydney to have a bit of grass and pace; the Gabba in Brisbane to seam around; Adelaide should be a little slow. It should be the traditional stuff that we love in Australian culture,” said Lee, who has recently taken up a coaching role with Ireland to help them in their World Cup campaign.
