Captain Virat Kohli was at his imperious best. It was another session of purposeful batting. Dominating a tired attack, Kohli ensured he grounded the opposition to start thinking about survival when it was their turn to bat.

The star for the Mumbai crowd was Jayant Yadav too. There are players who look the part when they enter the big stage, Jayant is one. In this series he has given indication he has enough skill with his bat, but yesterday was a special theatre.

Jayant lights up Wankhede
A super Sunday, a near-packed house in Mumbai and his captain batting alongside him, Jayant couldn't have found a better podium. He looked pedigreed in his shape as a batsman of high quality.

What is most impressive of Jayant, the batsman is his uncomplicated approach of scoring runs. The footwork looks sure. His ability to pick gaps confirms he thinks like a batsman despite being an all-rounder.

In time to come Jayant will be tested with the short ball. He did get himself into an awkward position while shaping up against it. That is why a Test hundred, only in his third Test, will make him approach this chink like a batsman.

Smart and balanced enough
He looks smart and balanced enough to acknowledge that he will be tested, and it goes without saying he will work on it. Jayant's maiden Test hundred was a display of what quality, when coupled with confidence, can do to a young player.

Jayant has given all enough reason to believe he has arrived on the big stage. This hundred may not be just three figures for him, but a statement he has made that he belongs here.

This Test match may be all but over for England at the end of Day Four. They need to play well, not to be steamrolled today. They need to rework their four-seam attack at Chennai where they most likely would be playing for pride.
