India should not allow Kandahar hijack to repeat itself, tighten security at airports and equip them to tackle terror

Talking to Sunday MiD DAY, a senior Air India pilot on the condition of anonymity said. "We are lagging behind the Europeans and the Americans (airport authorities) who examine everyone irrespective of his or her position.

I remember an incident where an Indian cine celebrity was stopped for the security check in America and lot of criticism came from our country against US but I support such steps because the US, after 9/11, is only more alert." Another pilot of a private airline said, "I don't want to name the airports but most of the airports in the north east and the neighbouring states are lacking in security which is a serious problem, a big threat. Also, we don't have safety equipment like explosive detectors at many places." The terror incident, which occurred on the Delta airlines Flight 253, was almost a replay of the IC 814 hijack. The Delta Airlines Flight 253 was carrying 278 passengers and 11 crew members aboard. The IC 814 had 178 passengers and 15 crew on board. In both, the modus operandi was the same u2014 terrorists were on the passenger list.

On November 26, Abdul Mudallad, 23, a passenger on the Nigerian Delta Airlines Flight 253 flying in from Amsterdam, burnt his leg trying to ignite explosives on board when the flight was 20 minutes away from landing at Detroit. From the preliminary investigations it is revealed that Mudallad is an active member of al-Qaeda network.
