Bogota: FIFA president Gianni Infantino said he would like to expand the number of teams in the World Cup to 48 by adding a playoff match at the start.

Under the new format, the 16 countries that finish highest in qualifying rounds for the 2026 World Cup would make the group stage of the World Cup.
"The next 32 (teams) would play a match to decide the other 16. That way we would have 16 more teams qualifying for a final stage of the World Cup, in which they would be playing for a spot in the group stage," Infantino added
