Paes and Indian doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi had lost 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) in the quarter-finals to Polish duo Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski before the 38-year-old had to scratch from his mixed doubles semi-final with Elena Vesnina.
Both Paes and Bhupathi are key to India's hopes of beating Japan in their play-off in Tokyo from September 16-18 if they are to play in the World Group next season. "Rough day for Leander, back spasms during the doubles. Out of mixed and now in doubt for Davis cup too," wrote Bhupathi on his Twitter account.

Bops-Qureshi win
Meanwhile, Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi beat top British duo of Colin Flemming and Ross Hutchins 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 in their quarter-final clash that had been delayed due to rain.
