Yerawada police have arrested the offender, who was lodged in Yerawada Central Jail for a theft case, for manhandling a jailor, who had gone to his barracks to bring another inmate for investigation. The accused inmate has been identified as Vijay Dilip Charya.
A few days ago jail authorities during a surprise raid found Rs 1,000 in cash from one inmate Jay Rajesh Bhosale and during an inquest, names of two more inmates, Rohidas Gupte and Rajendra Kamthe, cropped up in the case.
“During the investigation, Bhosale admitted to jail authorities that he had received money through Gupte and Kamthe and in order to inquire, jailor Vaman Nimje went to Kamthe’s barracks,” said API Shivaji Bendre, of Yerawada Police station.
He said that when he along with two more jail wardens reached the area, Charya allegedly came in the way and started seeking explanations as to why Nimje had interrogated Gupte, and accused him of dragging his name into the mess. “He then allegedly manhandled Nimje and even obstructed him from discharging his duties,” he added.
He further added, “We have arrested him under section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of IPC.” Superintendent of the jail Yogesh Desai said was not reachable for comment.
