Thane: In a remarkable gesture, a blind, elderly couple from the district has pledged their eyes for donation.

Arun Sali, 62, and Smita Sali, 58, submitted the eye donation form during a medical camp organised here by the Shiv Sena MP from Kalyan, Dr Shrikant Shinde, which ended today.

Arun Sali, who recently retired as a telephone operator from a Bank, said he and his wife wanted to do something for the society, so they decided to donate their eyes.

MP Shinde also pledged his eyes for donation during the two-day camp.

Doctors at the camp said that in certain types of blindness the eye can be donated even though the donor himself or herself is sightless.

Over 1,300 persons got their eyes tested at the camp attended by doctors from multiple eye hospitals, the MP added.
