Inter-school football: AVM, Bosco are U-14 champs

Arya Vidya Mandir (Juhu) and Don Bosco (Matunga) won the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA)-organised inter-school girls and boys under-14 Division I football titles respectively at Azad Maidan yesterday. In the girls final, the Juhu side's captain Sai Sankhe scored the all-important goal to help Arya Vidya Mandir beat Cathedral and John Connon (Fort) 1-0 to win the title for the third time in succession. The Juhu outfit outplayed the Fort team as they used aerial shots and built their attack with the intent to disrupt the opposition's defensive moves.

Cathedral succumb
AVM continued to dominate the proceedings and Cathedral succumbed to the pressure as striker Sai slotted the ball into the net in the eighth minute from inside the penalty area after a good assist from teammate Saanvi Zutshi. "The girls stuck to the game plan and performed to perfection and that is why we could win the game," said match-winner Sai.

Meanwhile, AVM coach Desmond D'Souza told mid-day "It took me a lot of time to build this team and I am very impressed with the way they performed in the final. This victory is very special to us as it is a hat-trick of titles in the under 14 category." In the boys final, Rom Padelkar and Keith Fernandes scored a goal each to help Don Bosco (Matunga) register a 2-0 win over St Stanislaus High School (Bandra). The Matunga outfit opened their account in the 10th minute after as Rom scored outside the penalty area after he received a pass from teammate Karsten D'Souza. At half-time, Don Bosco were leading 1-0. In the 30th minute, St Stanislaus' Alister Picardo fouled the Matunga side's Errol Noronha and Don Bosco was given a free kick. Karsten took the free kick and passed the ball to forward Keith, who didn't make a mistake to score the winner.
