The first International Yoga Day was enthusiastically celebrated in Thane at several places.

District Collector Ashwini Joshi, renowned scientist Anil Kakodkar, MLA Sanjay Kelkar among others attended the event organised by Ghantali Mitra Mandal at an auditorium here.

Kakodkar said,"With the International Yoga Day being celebrated all across the globe, Yoga will get a new dimension now".

Joshi said, "Efforts are on to bring about good behaviour among the staff in the government offices and the practise of Yoga will go a long way in achieving the same".

Meanwhile, Yoga was performed by Thaneits at 75 different locations organised by various organisations. Women, youth and children performed Yoga at these places to mark this day.

The United Nations had in December last year declared June 21 as International Yoga Day, with 177 countries voting in favour.

The proposal had been mooted by the Prime Minister during his first address to the UN General Assembly in September last year.
