iPhone 4S gets record one million pre-orders

Apple's "disappointing" iPhone 4S is a hit with customers.

First day pre-orders for the device surpassed one million in just 24 hours said Apple, which exceeds the company's previous record of 600,000 single day pre-orders held by the iPhone 4.

"We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do."

American carrier AT&T revealed that demand for the device has been "extraordinary" with more than 200,000 orders placed during the first 12 hours.

Despite the strong demand for the soon-to-be-released iPhone 4S, Apple's older model iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS are still selling well. According to an article by Apple Insider that reported on findings by Analyst T. Michael Walkley, "customers continue to embrace the iPhone 4 and two-year-old iPhone 3GS, even as a new model is set to debut."

While pre-orders for the iPhone 4S grow, the launch of a flagship Samsung-made Galaxy Nexus smartphone has been delayed.

The device is rumored to be the first to run a new version of Google's Android smartphone operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Samsung and Google had originally planned to unveil the new device during the October 11 Samsung Unpacked event but Samsung has since announced the phone will be debuted at a special event in London on October 27 out of respect for the late Steve Jobs.
