IPL 2017: Steve Smith hails super Ben Stokes, Jaydev Unadkat after Pune beat Mumbai

Riding on England pacer Ben Stokes' (2-21) and a disciplined bowling effort by Saurashtra's left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat in the deciding over, Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by three runs at the Wankhede Stadium yesterday.

RPS skipper Steven Smith handed over the ball to Stokes to bowl the 19th over of the innings when Mumbai needed 24 off 12 deliveries. Stokes, who had already bowled a wicket-maiden earlier in the innings, gave away only seven runs which left Mumbai needing 17 in the last six balls.

Unadkat too shouldered the responsibility very well. He first sent Hardik Pandya (13) back and then accounted for MI skipper Rohit Sharma (58 in 39 balls). He also contributed in Mitchell McClenaghan's run-out.

RPS's opener and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane explained how they zeroed in on Unadkat to bowl the last over. "After the 19th over Smith, Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) and I were discussing whether Shardul (Thakur) or Unadkat should bowlthe last over. We went with Unadkat because Thakur has good pace, and we didn't want to give that kind of pace to the batsman in the last over," said Rahane.

Smith lavished praise on Stokes and Unadkat for keeping their cool and bowling the team to a close win in front of a partisan crowd yesterday.

"I thought we scrapped really well in the end. Stoksy in the second half was excellent and Unadkat got us over the line," Smith said during the presentation ceremony.

MI's Harbhajan Singh also said that it was Stokes 19th which made the difference. "Stokes' over was actually very crucial for them. We didn't get any boundary in that over. That over actually changed the scenario for them."
