With the city already reeling under the 10 per cent water cut for last one year, the irrigation department recently sent a letter to the PMC officials insisting to implement a 20 per cent cut. But the water department refused to oblige.

“Despite sufficient rain, irrigation department continued with the cut. Last year dams were filled 100 per cent and the water cut was not needed. Even now the water level in dams is sufficient and will last till July,” a senior PMC official said.
In the letter to the water department, which was written during April-end, officials of the irrigation department mentioned that rise in temperature had aggravated water evaporation, several leakages in canals that connect dams to purification centres had led to decrease in water level in the dams. Hence, the PMC must implement additional 10 per cent water cut. In its reply, water department officials refused to implement the additional cut.
“Currently, the PMC is supplying water once a day. The city needs about 1,125 MLD water a day. If additional 10 per cent cut is enforced then several connections will not get enough supply. Various areas in the city will suffer from low water pressure,” a PMC official said.u00a0
