David Coleman Headley’s deposition has opened old wounds for Ishrat Jahan’s family and supporters, after he told the court yesterday that the deceased 19-year-old was a suicide bomber working for LeT.

Ishrat’s mother, Shamima Kauser told mid-day, “It’s the same old lie again. I have said it many times that my daughter is innocent, and I say the same thing today. Three government reports from Magistrate S P Tamang, the SIT (State Investigation Team) and CID clearly proved in court that my daughter was innocent and she was killed in a fake encounter. Allah knows everything about my daughter.”

She added it was ridiculous if people considered Headley’s statement reliable, since he himself is a terrorist and a liar.

NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad, who came out in support of the family early on, said, “The question and answer between public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and Headley speak volumes. At first, Headley had openly answered that he doesn’t know about any suicide bomber. Then he was given three names — Noor Begum, Ishrat Jahan and Mumtaz — and asked which of them was a suicide bomber and he said Ishrat. This is contradictory, and according to the law, such multiple-choice questions are not allowed.” Activist and president of the My Mumbra Foundation, Rauf Lala, also questioned why Headley was asked game show-style questions in which he was given no choice but to name one of the three women as a suicide bomber.

“He didn’t make the statement, it was taken out from him. Like in KBC, he was given options. He had never seen any evidence of Ishrat’s involvement himself. It has already been proved that the Ishrat case was a fake encounter. Three investigation agencies said there was no terror link between Ishrat and the LeT. Headley cannot be trusted,” said Lala.
