Italian marines may be shifted from jail to remand home

Even as the bail pleas of the two jailed Italian marines were rejected by a Kerala court last week, the state government is considering moving them from a jail here to a Borstal school in Kochi, sources said Wednesday.

Italian marines may be shifted from jail to remand home

Italian marines, Latorre Massimillano and Salvatore Girone, were first sentenced by a court in Kollam for 14 days custody Feb 20 after two Indian fishermen, Ajesh Binki, 25, and Gelastine, 45, were allegedly mistaken as pirates and shot dead by them while serving as the security crew of cargo vessel Enrica Lexie Feb 15, off Alappuzha in Kerala.

A police official confirmed to IANS that the decision had been taken to shift the two Italians to the Borstal school but they might not be moved Thursday as a state-wide shutdown had been called.

The decision to shift the accused to the Borstal school comes at a time when the judicial custody of the two marines ends Friday and they have to be presented before the Kollam chief judicial magistrate.

"Hence, they will be taken from the jail here to the Kollam court Friday and then they will be shifted to the Borstal School in Kochi," said an official, who did not wish to be identified.
