SC issues notice to Metro regarding replacement of damaged car with new one. Metro crane had crashed into it

After waiting for over six months, Shashi Dharan may be hopeful of being compensated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). In May, Shashi Dharan and his family had a miraculous escape when a crane weighing about 40 tonne working at a Delhi Metro construction site crashed into their car.

The notice is limited to the replacement of the damaged car with the new one.

"It's a welcome move. After my accident I have been speaking against the faulty procedure of constructing the Metro pillars. But no one listened. Soon after, DMRC found so many cracks in the pillars," said Dharan.

Dharan and his family members were traveling in his new Honda Civic car on May 9, 2009, when near Jor Bagh, a Metro construction crane boom, weighing around 40 tonne fell on it.

Recollecting the mishap, Dharan said, "Though no one was injured, the incident could have taken a far more serious turn as the crane missed the centre of my car by just a few centimetres. I had suggested the DMRC be alert to avoid any such untoward incident in the future.u00a0 Unfortunately, the frantic pace of construction is coming at the cost of safety."

Dharan had sent a legal notice to DMRC for a compensation of Rs 2 crore. Dharan's plea had been earlier dismissed by the Delhi High Court.
