New Delhi: South Africa’s woes in the Test series continued as they were bowled out for only 121 on Day Two at the Kotla yesterday. Ravindra Jadeja, who will turn 27 on Sunday, starred with a spell of five for 30, with some good support at the other end. This, after Ajinkya Rahane’s century helped India post 334 on the board — the first time a team has breached the 300-run mark in this series.

On a wicket where batsmen had a better chance, South Africa faltered to hand India a huge advantage. The visitors were bowled out late in the day before stumps. India are not enforcing the follow-on despite the 213-run lead.

Rahane got his century early in the day and celebrated with an uncharacteristic expression of joy. It’s come after a lean run in the last few games and at the venue of his Test debut. Resuming the day on 231 for seven, Rahane had Ravichandran Ashwin (56) for company.

South Africa looked ragged in the field as they failed to maintain the pressure on the hosts. On Day One, India were 139 for six before Rahane powered a recovery. Not to forget the fact that South Africa also dropped a few catches, which proved costly. “We missed a few chances, and a few decisions didn’t go our way. So it wasn’t a very good last 40-50 overs with the ball, and not a good 45 overs with the bat today,” Russell Domingo, the South African coach said.

That spilled into their batting as Jadeja ran through their top-order. It wasn’t the toughest surface in the series and South Africa are disappointed. “It just wasn’t good enough as a performance,” Domingo said.

The highlight of Jadeja’s spell was his first wicket. The ball pitched around off and held its line to crash into the stumps. Temba Bavuma, playing his first Test in India, was left flummoxed. Umesh Yadav castled JP Duminy with a good ball to record his 50th Test scalp. Ishant Sharma also chipped in with one that bowled Dane Vilas.

SA pay the price
While there were a few good deliveries, South Africa also paid the price for some unnecessary shots. Dean Elgar chased a wide one from Yadav. Faf du Plessis tried to scoop Jadeja, when he hadn’t opened his account. Skipper Hashim Amla edged one as he tried to cut one from Jadeja.

“We have to give credit to India’s spinners because they have bowled well throughout the series, but we also have to take responsibility for some very soft dismissals,” Domingo said at the end of a disappointing day.
