A magnitude-7.1 aftershock rattled Japan on Monday, one month after the 9.0-magnitude earthquake that spawned a deadly tsunami.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, was near Hamadori of Fukushima Prefecture.

Japan's meteorological agency has issued a tsunami warning saying that a three-foot wave could hit Ibaraki prefecture, the area worst hit by last month's massive tsunami.

Workers battling to contain the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima power plant have been ordered to evacuate, News.com.au reports.

According to reports, the quake caused some buildings to sway in Tokyo.

Narita International Airport temporarily closed a runway for safety checks.
