10 things you should know before you attend tonight's performance at the Blue Frog

1 Originating in southern USA, jazz music is a combination of African and European music traditions. It blends in blue notes, improvisation and swing notes.

2 Jazz music was first used in reference to music from Chicago, in the early 20th century. It has evolved in several other sub-genres such as New Orleans Dixieland, big band-style swing, bebop, Afro-Cuban Jazz, Brazilian Jazz, Jazz-Rock fusion, and the more recent Acid Jazz.

3 The realm of Jazz music was, and still is, predominantly associated with the African American community. The musicians transitioned from banjos and tambourines and learned to play European instruments such as the violin. Black slaves from early America often set spiritual songs to music.

4 After emancipation, employment opportunities for black slaves were limited as segregation laws were still in practice. Most slaves found themselves in the entertainment industry as piano players and instrumentalists. They became low-cost entertainers as minstrels, vaudeville players, piano bar players, and marching band members. Soon, this kind of music called Ragtime Jazz spread from southern USA to other cities.

5 Ragtime jazz became very popular in the early part of the century. Musician Jelly Roll Morton published the first ever jazz arrangement in print in 1915 with the title Jelly Roll Blues. This arrangement brought forth a new breed of musicians playing ragtime.

6 Ragtime music moved on from red-light district bars and vaudeville shows to major concert locations such as the Carnegie Hall.

7 The first jazz record was recorded in 1913 by Society Orchestra, the first black group to come out with a record. Another group that came up with their very own jazz music recording is the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Other bands followed suit, releasing recordings in 1917.

8 Louis Armstrong, a trumpeter, band leader and singer, came to be known as the Ambassador of Jazz, because of his early innovations in jazz music.

9 Throughout the years Jazz music has always been the preferred music genre among those who enjoy light and easy listening.

10 Jazz music is perhaps also the most unique form of music as no two performances are ever the same.

Enjoy Jazz at Blue Frog
Madhav Chari, the very first International Standard Jazz Group from India, will be performing tonight. The group features Madhav Chari on piano, Jeoraj George on drums and Naveen Kumar on bass.

The performance will include all the music forms that have significantly impacted jazz music: afro-Cuban and afro-Brazilian music, the tango from Argentina, afro-Caribbean and New Orleans music, blues (both traditional and modern), gospel music, western classical music, traditional and modern jazz.

Very few jazz groups in Europe or the US have this range of music in their repertoire. The bulk of the music performed will be original compositions by Madhav Chari, together with a small selection drawn from composers Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Cole Porter and Sting.
