this Saturday

Qureshi hails from a background that reverberates with the Taal of the Tabla and Joe Alvares admits that music is Qureshi's natural gift. Joe Alvarez, who is himself an acclaimed Jazz musician is very excited about his performance. "As a Western music Jazz singer this is my first public concert with the famous Zakir Hussain's brother Fazal Qureshi," he says.

According to Alvares, Jazz and Tabla are an unusual mix, but they are certainly not incompatible. "This mix is purely like a new love affair which is the result of my love for Indian music. The Indian flavour of the Tabla is sensitive, subtle and very powerful. In fact, I think through this performance we will be able to express ourselves better, given the enormous talent Fazal has," says Alvares. Both the musicians will be playing their original compositions.

Alvares is thrilled about performing in Pune and he says Pune has a special place in his heart. "I have a long relationship with Pune. I remember singing at a rock concert at the Rajendra Sinhaji Institute in the 70s and some 9,000 people turned up! I was singing with Atomic Forest, the leading band in the country at that time," he recalls. "I have also performed at the Osho ashram in the 80s and 90s. I did a Jazz concert with Louis Banks at the Shisha Caf ufffd as well. It was fantastic," he adds.

He loves performing in Pune the reason being, "The crowd in Pune is culturally and artistically richer than in Mumbai. Because it's an education hub, you see a lot of kids at the concerts. It's a haven for any artist to display his art."

On May 28, 7.30 pm
At Tango, Taj Vivanta, Koregaon Park.
